The State Archive in Kielce was established in 1920 on the basis of the decree of The Ministry of Religious Creed and Public Enlighment   “About the State Archives” from 7.02.1919. It started its own activity on the 1st January 1923, that is three years after the organization at works. However the beginnings of the institution reach the 19 th century and originate in the historical archives of Kraków, Kielce, Radom. The first mention of  the existence of such an institution is in Denker’s Report  from 6.03.1919.

Its initial years were not easy. The enormity of tasks introduced to the outpost  appeared even more difficult because of one-person-stuff and bad accommodation conditions. The new archive was  to safeguard the documentation from the whole former Kielce’s Gubernye (administrative districts of Jędrzejów, Kielce, Miechów, Pińczów, Olkusz, Stopnica, Włoszczowa).

Zenon Żurawski became the first manager, but a few months later Lucjan Głazek took over his post. Between 1923-1939 the institution’s main task was secere accumulate and sort out the found and give searches. The found was used especially by regional researchers, but only to minimal degree. The reasons, why it happened were bad accommodation conditions, little space in storerooms and frequent moves. The first seat of archive in Kielce had only 4 rooms and was situated in former Bishops Palace. In 1923 this locum was moved to a worse place and later in 1935 it was transferred to 5 Mickiewicz Street. Next changes took place in 1940, the authorities in occupation moved it to Mała Street and Rynek. Four workers were here hired, among them Franciszek Paprocki, because of new tasks they had to face. Germans wanted   to exclude from Kielce’s found all documents concerning Polish areas which were incorporated to  Third Reich and take them away (2000 kg of documents were transported to Katowice in1942). Piotr Bańkowski and Antoni Rybarski were the outstanding archivists who came to Kielce after the fall of Warsaw Uprising. They started their work in 1944. Their cooperation was short but very profitable. After The Second World War the most important thing to do was to take over the documents threaded by destruction. Huge archives of families were taken over. The found was divided into two divisions. The first  included acts from 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the second  included years 1919-1939. The archive was managed by Marian Witkowski, Władysław Prawdzik, Jan Pazdur and Stanisław Steczeń one after another. On the power of the decree from 29.03.1951. the new net of administrative districts appeared. Except the ones in Końskie, Opoczno, Sandomierz, Starachowice, next ones in Pińczów and Jędrzejów were opened. But in 1952 the one in Opoczno and in 1975 in Końskie were done away with. In 1975 the Radom’s district was changed into the Provincial Archive just like in Sandomierz. In 1951 the Kielce’s authorities gave to the archive the building of the old synagogue on Warszawska Str. It was in 70% destroyed and required reconstruction and adaptation needed by the archive.  Here the archive is housed to nowadays.  The managers of the State archive in Kielce were also Jan Naumiuk and Stanisław Marcinkowski. At present Elwira Szczepaniak holds the post. Area of operation of Archive in Kielce are former Kielce and Tarnobrzeg provinces.
